Business Lessons We Must Remember_Michelle and Sara Photography_2018

Last week a big story dropped…Style Me Pretty will be closing their doors. After twelve years of creating amazing content for bride and grooms, they are saying goodbye. As one of the top three wedding blog industry leaders to shut their doors and say goodbye shocked the wedding industry. A lot of professional, and top of the line, wedding photographers jumped on this opportunity to talk. To say how much they were going to miss it and to say how well Style Me Pretty marketed their business for them.

Why is this such a HUGE deal to so many? Well, in the world of being your own business owner – you have to learn on how to be so many different things at first. In this case, you have to become a marketer in your field. You have to learn where your inquires are coming from, how that technique is working, and how to change it with new platforms arising. To be quite frank, it is tough.

However, if you find that being published is a source of your marketing, you are going to keep going with it. This can be the cause of one of our biggest downfalls though. If you continue to put your eggs ALL in one basket, what happens when the basket breaks? What happens when you put all of your time, energy, and business future all on ONE thing that might crumble? Is that a good business strategy for us to follow? How can we learn from this example?

ONE

You need to be out there. Our business mentor and coach, Lauren Carnes, told us that while social media is huge – NOTHING compares to in person networking. When you take that time out of your day to spend time with others, it is incredible. You’re building those personal, deep conversations. This also builds relationships that step outside of the “social media” wall. You’re going to want to go deeper than just skin deep.

TWO

Don’t put your eggs all in one basket. Again, what happens when the basket becomes too full and breaks? If you put ALL into one basket then you’re not really trying new things. Yes, it may be working for you great, but also try something new. Trying new techniques of how to market or network can be such a positive on your business!

THREE

When you plant a seed, it will take time to grow and so does a business. While you’ll hear success stories that a business grew in one year, you have to take into consideration so many factors. How much overtime did they work? What is their business model? Are you even in the same field or business that they are? This could take someone two years and for someone else it could take five years. There are SO many different variables that are involved!

Everyone is going to have so many different opinions on what works or what doesn’t work for them, but remember that you have to do what is best for YOUR business. So while you are working hard, remember these few business tips to encourage you!
