“The Benefits of Creating an Outdoor Event Space” Guest Article by Natalie Greenberg

The Educated Bride

May 15, 2020

We’ve captured some incredible images on private home estates. It’s certainly got us thinking about the potential of using these estates to create unique outdoor event spaces. We get that some folks might find the idea of hordes of strangers flocking to their backyards a bit … off-putting. But the right event space doesn’t have to rob you of your privacy. The benefits of creating an outdoor event space outweigh any drawbacks.

Connecting With Your Community

Not every couple seeking a wedding venue is looking to throw a huge, raging party in a big event hall. Many wedding celebrations are small, intimate affairs consisting of a handful of family members and friends. If you’re willing to offer your property for intimate gatherings, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you connect with the people who choose your venue.

Venue owners often become a part of a family’s circle. You may find guests of events in your space return to host their own affairs. A recently married couple may choose to return for a baby shower or anniversary celebration. Memorable outdoor venues bring communities together and create new and lasting bonds within them.

Putting Your Property to Work

Outdoor venues come in all shapes and sizes. They can host 20 to 200 guests. If you have a unique, visually stunning space, you can offer it as a venue. Sure, if you have a sprawling ranch or farm, you could rent out the land to offset the cost of maintaining the property.

The amount of work required of a venue owner is often minimal. Professionals take care of every aspect of a wedding, from start to finish. All you have to supply is access to amenities such as bathrooms, a place for a wedding party to prepare, and electricity and water. Unless you have a well-equipped carriage or pool house, you may need to make some minor modifications to make it suitable for events.

You will need to take out extra insurance in case of any unforeseen accidents. You’ll also have to make sure you have plenty of parking available, to avoid upsetting neighbors.

The good news is that you’ll able to pay back your costs through hosting events. Once you break even, whatever you make is profit. Even if your goal is merely to cover your maintenance fees and property taxes, you will have the pleasure of your property sustaining itself!

Ever-Improving Your Property

If you choose to create a venue space on your property, you’ll have to make sure it looks its best at all times. This means staying on top of seasonal lawn maintenance, keeping the hedges trimmed, and flower beds fresh. Hiring a local lawn care professional can be cost-effective and make a big difference here. But if your property is venue-worthy, you’re probably already doing all that.

You may want to consider improving your property with updated hardscapes, expanding planting areas, or adding outdoor structures. Any improvement you make to your space will be to your benefit. And unlike improvements you make for pleasure, anything benefiting the venue is a business expense. That means it’s a tax write-off.

Have a special property that others will enjoy and remember for years to come. Consider opening your gates to the possibilities. There are huge benefits to creating an outdoor expense space, at any scale.
