Passport FAQ + Helpful Passport Tips | How To Series

Traveling around the world is incredible and is such a site to see…well from what we hear! Our first out of country trip is coming up fast and there is a TON of things we have to accomplish!  Joe travels a lot for work and hears these questions asked all the time: “how do we get our passports?,” “Is it going to take a long time to receive it afterwards?,” “Is all the work to get it worth it?”  YES, it is worth every effort and long process to apply and to receive your passport! After going through it ourselves, we found out shortcuts along the way! We wanted to share the tips that we found out along the way of getting our passports!

Tip #1: Find out where your nearest local passport registration center is! You could always register at your local post office, but it might easier + better if you go to your passport registration center first!

Tip #2: First is to print off the application form off of the website! This will begin to explain part of everything you will need for when you have your appointment at your local passport registration center.

Tip #3: Have all the necessary forms ready to go!  Theses are the items that you will need: proof of citizenship, certified copy of your birth certificate, proof of identity (I.D.), and a passport photograph (tip #4)!  Just as a bonus tip, when you are viewing your birth certificate, make sure the names on your birth certificate match your drivers license. Secondly, make sure the full name of your parents is clearly written on the certificate. This information is vital!

Tip #4: Your passport photo is extremely important! It is one of the documentations you will need to bring alongside of the other information.  Our tip when going to get your photograph taken, wear as neutral color clothing as possible. Wear your hair as you normally would as well as wearing your normal amount of makeup. You want your picture to look as much as you without being to over the top as possible.

Tip #5: If you know you are going away on a trip, give yourself plenty of time to get your passport!  Normally it takes up to 6 weeks to get your passport back, Expedited is 3 weeks and expedited at the agency is 8 days. There are additional fees for expedited.

Tip #6: A booklet passport allows you to travel overseas by boat or by a plane. A wallet passport only allows you to travel to certain locations by boat only!

Tip #7: When booking flights to travel overseas, you don’t need a passport right then! So you can purchase your ticket ASAP, before applying and receiving your passport!

Tip #8: Once you receive your passport in, sign it, and take a photograph of the page with your photo and ID information. Store this in your phone encase you ever lose your passport!

Tip #9: Look for adorably bright colored passport holders to protect it from damage while traveling!! Ours is from Kate Spade! (hearteyes!!!)
