Working as an entrepreneur is both very rewarding and a lot of hard work at the same time. You put in a lot of your time, energy, sometimes your weekends for very little. However, that little reward is so grand! This reward can be finally purchasing that new camera lens you’ve been wanting or just taking your family out to dinner on YOU. Being a creative entrepreneur doesn’t mean you have to or will make a six figure income business.
For Sara and I, it is about making an income on doing something that we both LOVE to do and enjoying life together. When we first began to work together (in different offices), it was difficult. We couldn’t get the balance just quiet right yet. Sara made the proposal about working in the same office and at first, I didn’t like it. Not because I don’t like Sara, but for the fact that I have never worked with someone in the same office before since beginning this photography business.
Let’s just say that at first it wasn’t easy at all. We had to figure out a good balance between personal and work! In order to have a good balance, we figured out that setting up some guidelines would help us keep a balance between professional and personal!
One guideline that set up is taking a social media free weekend. This doesn’t mean we won’t browse around on social media, but we just don’t post anything. It takes that pressure off of us so that we can truly enjoy our relationship (personally) as well as our friends and family! It also doesn’t mean that we don’t want to show you what our life looks like on the weekend, but it is always a good thing to detox every few days or so.
The other guideline we have is setting up some “quality time” together to cultivate our relationship even more to where we actually don’t feel as mother and daughter, but sisters. Cultivating this relationship means going out not as business partners, but just simply as a mother and a daughter! This can be as simple as a coffee date where we set a rule about no-work discussion allowed OR going out to the theater!
So in March we broke a rule and followed another – Sara shared on our IG stories (rule broken) that we were going to go do something that has been a tradition for us for a few years now (rule followed)! We saw The Phantom of the Opera, in theater, for the third time together! Late last year we saw Mamma Mia, then this year we planned to see the Phantom of the Opera and The Sound of Music! Sara is trying to get tickets for Hamilton, but you know how difficult that might be to get.
It is our time to step away from the computers, to step away from our business side, and to just have a fun couple of hours together as mommabear and babybear (our nicknames)!
Now, what is something that you love to do that is outside of business with your team members? Is it seeing a movie, having a cookout, or getting coffee together? We would love to hear all about your ideas below!
