Photographers Guide To Photographing In Difficult Places | How To Series

During every wedding, we search out for that beautiful location to give use those GORGEOUS photographs of just our bride and groom! Those little nuggets of gold, where the magic just happens! Photographers, you know those little bits of gold we are talking about! In locations that you have photographed at before, it is easy to remember what places have that pop and other places that simply won’t work. Yet, at a new venue, it can be a little bit more difficult (at first) to find these little nuggets of gold! But, this is why the bride and groom hired us to do!

So what happens when we are in a completely new location and you are drawing a blank? You’ve had it happen…where you are looking at a venue and you can’t find more than one place to photograph, that’s stressful, right?! I think at some point in our career, we have all felt that pressure! I bet the question you are thinking of is, “what do I do to not have this brain freeze?!” Thankfully, that is what we are here to share with YOU! These are our tips we have learned over the past TEN years of photographing! Are you ready?! Lets dive in!

  1. Check Out The Locations! This is very simple, but this is SO key when it comes to working your magic on the wedding day! A simple way that you can do this is visiting the night of the dress rehearsal! You can typically see the venue around the time you would be photographing their couple session!
  2. Look Up Local Events! When we photographed Silvia and Lorenzo’s wedding, a summer festival was happening! It also was the last day of the festival on a SATURDAY. So lets just say that there were a LOT of people walking around right where Silvia wanted these photographs taken! Yet, if we didn’t know that this was happening, it would have created a lot more problems for us! Which leads me into point #3!
  3.  Always Give Yourself EXTRA Time!  This one just always speaks for itself.
  4. Go With The Flow! Embrace what the background is, but also choose the best of what won’t be TOO distracting!
  5. Trust Yourself! It’s completely okay to say, “lets change it up!” Because the couple trusts you to photograph their wedding, so they will trust you if you want to switch things up a bit! If there are a LOT of people in the background, just drop your F-Stop down to blur them out!
  6. International Or Out Of State, Grab A Driver!  If you aren’t driving to the wedding, have a driver who knows the area drive you (and your team) around! Trust us, this will be the best investment you will do!

With a little tenacity and a lot of patience, you can create beautiful photographs for your couple! So go out in confidence, knowing that you can get that shot, dear friends!!
